This desire for authenticity extends to the game’s island setting. “You could say things like this are inspiring.” “My kids used to hide under the blanket and say, ‘Dad, you can’t see us, can you?'” added game designer Changkee Nam. “I personally get a lot of animation ideas from watching my daughter and the way she moves,” says Kim. Instead, the ideas are designed to make the characters more engaging. However, developer Pearl Abyss hopes these social elements are not misunderstood: DokeV has a huge open world, but unlike previous games like Black Desert Online, this is not an MMORPG. This certainly explains the focus of the game’s young characters interacting in the opening shot (it’s worth noting that Kim’s background in animation and motion capture was a factor in her castration in making the character). “After that, I wondered what I liked when I was younger, which naturally reminded me of all the fun I had growing up with my friends.” (If we’re being harsh, the frame rates in the battle scenes suggest Pearl Abyss is taking too many Game Freak cues, which of course is still a work in progress.)īut the idea behind DokeV is simpler: “It all started with the idea of making a game that I could play with my daughter,” lead producer Sangyoung Kim told me. It’s a fantastic open-world creature-collecting adventure after all, so in the hype that followed the first trailer, it was natural for some to suggest that’s what they’d expect the Pokémon game to look like now. The reaction to DokeV’s August debut at Gamescom may have been predictable.
